Guest:  Jill Kessler, Rottweiler Magazine Editor, breeder, dog expert & dog writer

Show Topics: Test your ethical self; which situation is the worst of three examples of animal cruelty from the news  then hear about some radical simple, easy effective solutions for your town or city.

Olympics and a possible boycott to support Tibet is in the news, as bird flu scare continues to appear and disappear the latest time this week in a remote village in China, and more products are yet again declared unsafe including many plastics imported from China and this is making legislation change to regulate imports and keep north Americans safe.  But what about the Chinese workers? And what about the athletes running in pretend conditions because real conditions are too dangerous doesn’t that mean real Chinese people are in danger every day and of course because of rain and weather and the flows of the earth, we all share the toxins in our water and air for years to come.

Deborah calls for a broadening of the debate.   A busted Arizona puppy mill,  the Carolina pregnant dog dumped by politician in charge of shelter’s fate, Puerto Rico’s dead dog beach.   Deborah gives a few examples of dogs gone out of control where there are no workable solutions due to remote locations with no Vets and no possibility of controlling population through spay and neuter.  Jill joins in to give some solutions to these problems.  Anti breeding laws don’t work. They punish the good guys and create demand for imported dogs along with the parasites, and rabies that are coming too. Animal rights activists vs Animal Welfare workers and what happens when politicians get wrong advice according to Jill.

ONE GOLDEN DOODLE  IS  AVAILABLE to be  donated and matched with the right family with special needs.  We are looking for a family that has an autistic child and is connected to P.A.D.S. or a similar assistance dog society and is waiting for a dog.  Our pups are half Standard Poodle, half Golden Retriever.  They are ideal for service work especially the type of safety buddy, friendly escort work required by an autistic kid who wants to walk around the block and interact with his brothers and sisters and their friends.   Golden Doodles train like Goldens which most programs are designed for and in most cases are a little bit faster to learn things (as poodles are generally smarter than goldens) but the cross gives the added bonus of non shedding properties.  Please send appropriate families to www.campgooddog.com to tell us about your family.  (Other special needs circumstances are also eligible.)  You can go to our website to see photos of the pups  that are for sale, their parents or just look up pet solutions to your pet problems (free) and listen to best of award winning radio shows too.

Jill logs in on the mailman debate suggesting an airhorn as the best defense against pestering dogs.  She walks a rottweiler and packs of  tiny foo foo dogs attack. The air horn works for Jill and her mailman and the UPS van too.  Obey barriers and signs at zoos or wherever animals and nature could harm visitors.  Make sure your kids obey too.  Deborah reports a mauling at a zoo when a girl is coached to pose behind a barrier and too close for a photo.  Do you know what a lion can do with its nails, teeth and jaw? Deborah will tell you.  There are more tigers as pets in North America than there are in the wild.

Guest:  Dusty Rainbolt, ‘Cat Wrangling Made Easy’

Show Topics:  Is your husband hung like a Poodle? You probably don’t know if that’s an insult or a compliment?  How good is your cat’s night vision? Why dogs have a bad rap sexually that they don’t deserve.  Some sex facts about dogs and cats you may not know.  The new corrected cat reproduction stat is that  2 in-tact cats, one papa + one mama and their offspring unchecked will result in over 400 cats in 7 years.  Don’t dump bunnies. ‘Dude, the rabbit is giving birth’ says the excited College student on the six o’clock news footage.  Don’t dump any pet in the ‘wilderness’ which is not empty; Its dense with life including predators who will eat your pet for lunch.   A new dog study out of Israel shows that Kids with dogs have less problems with high blood pressure than kids without.  If you’re planting trees this year consider planting a fruit bearing tree instead of mock trees or fake non fruit bearing ones.  We need more local foods and its amazing how much you and your garden wildlife will benefit.  A.S.P.C.A. rescues 110 cats from overcrowding, unsanitary, pest, illness infested waste ridden cat hoarder’s home.  The cats were friendly and loving to the rescuers despite their horrible circumstances and state of health.  How you know when the ‘cat lady’ (or ‘dog lady’) has a problem and has this mental illness which makes them keep in tact pets and their offspring and rescue others beyond the numbers they can properly handle with proper care.   How you recognize it and help.   One year ago  a Tiger killed the  wife of the  tiger trainer as children watched.  New proposed legislation is that anything not native to the area can not be brought here.  This is meant to control all foreign exotics from escape.

Dusty joins Deborah with information on a bounty put out on cats in Iowa City; $5/cat with no collar.  Alley cat rescue and Alley cat allies offered to do trap neuter and release instead of killing and giving bounty money.  Dusty explains why this is a long term solution whereas killing them would solve the problem today and new cats would be back tomorrow. Deborah asks Dusty what she can tell her emailers who are pro bird and anti feral cat.  Your cat needs to scratch and climb but it does not need to climb your curtains and scratch your sofa if you provide better.  Two very affordable solutions Dusty shares on-air and on-line at www.dustyrainbolt.com How you can tell which cat is the bully and which cat is the victim.   Why do cats always bug the person who is allergic or can’t stand cats?   If you have one cat you are 25% likely to have stains in your home; if you have ten cats you are 100% so listen to the show and get the book too. Quirky stats and facts will entertain you as you learn to be a cat wrangler.  Go to a bookseller’s site and look up ‘Cat Wrangling Made Easy’ to get your copy.   What will truly eliminate stains and stinks from cat sprays and marks?  How can you tell what kind of carpet stain it is? Is it marking? Is it pee?  How do you get all your cats to use the litter box properly?  Dusty explains why so many cats prefer the sofa as a scratch post.  kitty feng shuei is all about location, location, location and Height matters.  Create multi-levels and mini-turfs for cat harmony.    We misread cats by applying dog language; a cat lying on its side pretending to sleep is actually armed and in ambush and a cat wagging its tail?  Well let’s just say it is not the same as a dog!  Dogs fight over food, cats fight over the bathroom.   Meow is a word cats use on us and their mamas only.  They speak differently to each other verbally and visually and through scent.

Deborah asks is a cat who hides unhappy?  Is it better to be top cat or Bottom cat in a colony? Female queens share nursing and kitten raising duties.  Deborah ends the show with emails and pet solutions including ‘heel’.  For dogs. Dusty will be back with Deborah talking about how cats invented the concept of time share, and other feline secrets like  how you can tell a cat’s status by the place it picks to hang out, and you  can use a drop or two of what she suggests on each cat to scent enemies and make them friends.  Dusty will be back with more good cat  wisdom on The Animal Magnet –Pet RadioLive Thursday May 1, 2008 at 1.00 pm New York time, (10 a.m. in California).  Call during the LIVE show to ask Dusty your cat question! 1-888-873-4643.

Guest:  Dr. Ian Dunbar, D.V.M,  Dog training Guru, Author and Expert

Show Topics:  Dr. Ian Dunbar  is scientifically trained and eloquent on expressing the true nature of pets’ bodies and minds and how they relate to us, the human animals.  Who has more bones a cat or human?  Deborah answers last week’s pet trivia questions.  Plus updates on environmental issues and animal news including the blob floating in the Pacific and the fish we eat.  Can you guess how long it takes for a tin can to biodegrade? A roll of paper towel?  What about dental floss and diapers? How about an apple core.  There is a right way and a wrong way to toss an apple core.  New boat uses wave power to travel from Hawaii to Japan.  Imagine wave power moving all freight.  The chicken battle continues in Halifax.  Urban agriculture is more embraced in the U.S. than Canada with 53 cities in the U.S. officially condoning chickens in the city.  Did you know that in a flock of hens without a rooster, the most dominant hen crows like a rooster, acts like a rooster and mounts the hens?  It’s true.  Deborah explains why urban agriculture is so smart, and yummy. Paws up to California for methane gas energy.  What has three hearts, blue blood and eight legs?  An octopus - unless its the six legged one found this week.  Teenage kid recovers from unknown debilitating illness after no progress when doctor thinks to ask about dog treats.  Boy got two kinds of salmonella from partly cooked real treats.  Remember the pigs’ ear scare in the 80’s?  Wash your hands if you touch raw foods and treats and stay clear of pigs ears if you’re immune compromised, elderly or have kids under 5.

Mailmen vs. Dogs.  Is pepper spray a good idea? Deborah quotes an attacked mailman and reads from headlines and news clips from the last week and Ian Dunbar talks about making stupid irresponsible dog owners liable with their wallets.  After all it’s super easy to teach a dog bite inhibition as a puppy and teach him to come and socialize him and keep him controlled and with you when he encounters the mail carrier.  Ian and Deborah both agree that tazers won’t help if pepper sprays don’t work because good aim and a still dog is required for both and the potential for abuse is too high. Touch your dog all over his body every day especially when there are health issues.   If he hates his ears touched or his paws or his bum then listen to Ian describe how you can make him love being touched where he hates being touched now.

Ian describes his years of research watching puppies in labs.    Ian asks ‘Is there anyone here who has never had an argument?’
‘Is there anyone here who has never lost their temper and hit someone in anger even as a child?‘ and finally ‘Is there anyone here who has ever hurt someone so badly you put that person in hospital?’

He explains how this helps humans understand dogs and how to work with aggressive dogs in particular. This show is information packed like three textbooks combining philosophy, anatomy, and behavioral psychology but with Ian Dunbar chatting to Deborah the information is delivered like a story told by your favorite British Uncle.  He makes the dog mind and body make sense to the average human and fascinating too.   Why is abuse of dogs, horses and humans so much more prevalent than abuse of any thing else.  Ian explains why he thinks the horse whispering style training is negative reinforcement in training or mild punishment because its based on making the horse uncomfortable and confining him and it stresses the horses who like all animals learn better stress free.  Ian recommends lure training for everyone.  Using a reward object the animal wants which can be a toy or treat. If your dog is rude, listen to this show and Deborah will help you make Ian’s advice part of your life and your dog will be polite.  Seriously, in a day or two he will no longer jump on people. Ian says ‘it is blindingly simple’.   Ian explains the easy fast way to house train a dog.  How can you see Dr. Dunbar’s dog advice pod clips for free anytime you like?   www.dogstardaily.com.
